USING A CLICK TRACK (OR NOT)

Is using a click track in the recording studio essential? In a word... no. The use of a click track during the recording process is entirely optional and should be decided in terms of what best serves the production and performance of the song. Some songs may benefit from a metronomic feel, while others will need the natural push and pull of a band playing 'free time'.

In terms of the production side of things, there are some advantages to using a click track:

  • Much easier to edit the track in post production

  • Possible to ‘drop in’ sections of drums

  • Prevents noticeable speed-up or slow-down of the track

  • Possible to ‘comp’ (combine) two or more takes into one ‘master’ take.

  • Time-based effects such as delays can be synched with the track

The most important thing to do, if you decide during the pre-production process that you want to record a certain song to a click, is to REHEARSE that song AS A BAND to a click track. It is pointless rehearsing the song free time only to go into the studio and expect everyone to be able to lock into a click. Download a free metronome app to your phone and plug it into the PA at the rehearsal studio. It’s annoying as hell but it will make you a tighter band. While you’re at it, note down the ideal tempo for the song and let the engineer'/producer know.

Drummers in particular should spend the majority of their time practicing with a metronome. It helps to develop the internal metronome and makes you a better drummer.

It's worth discussing this and other aspects of the session beforehand, so feel free to get in touch and we'll be happy to talk about the logistics of the recording process and make recommendations as to the best approach for your band.
